Why make this commitment?
In spite of the remarkable progress achieved in recent years in the fight against pediatric cancers, one in five children still does not respond to treatment, and more than 70% of young cancer survivors live with long-term after-effects. By making a commitment to invest the sum of $50 million, the Fondation Charles-Bruneau aims to give research teams the means to fulfil their ambitions, by supporting promising projects aimed at curing more children with fewer side-effects.
To maximize its impact, the Fondation Charles-Bruneau is taking a joint approach to consolidating complementary areas of expertise across the four Quebec-based university hospital centres specialized in pediatric hematology and oncology. By acting as a catalyst for collaboration, it helps ensure that discoveries result in more timely applications in clinical care settings.
Through this structuring initiative, the Fondation Charles-Bruneau reaffirms its unwavering support for the scientific and medical community working with children with cancer.
Projects financed by the Fondation Charles-Bruneau over the next five years will revolve around three priorities:
Finding a cure for each and everyone,
Reducing after-effects,
and facilitating social integration.
Research projects
In keeping with its mission, the Charles-Bruneau Foundation orients its decisions on the medium term. The scientific projects it supports are selected following a long and rigorous process (approval by the scientific community and various governing bodies, creation of partnerships between institutions, financial agreements, etc.).

SIGNATURE QUEBEC PROJECT
By earmarking more than half of the funds for the Signature Project, the Fondation Charles-Bruneau wishes to capitalize on the major advances made possible by clinician scientists in recent years. These findings have already improved care outcomes for many children. This new commitment aims to offer more comprehensive and, above all, more timely diagnostics, to prevent certain cancers linked to genetic predispositions, identify more personalized and less invasive treatments, and target recurrent or refractory cancers.
This forward-looking project will be structured around complementary and closely harmonized work led by teams at the CHU Sainte-Justine and the Montreal Children’s Hospital. Other researchers throughout the province will also be called upon to contribute, thereby promoting greater scientific collaboration on a Quebec-wide scale.
QUEBEC PLATFORM IN PSYCHOSOCIAL ONCOLOGY
When a child is diagnosed with cancer, it sends shock waves through an entire family, with extremely difficult treatments, changes in daily function and uncertainty as to the cancer prognosis giving rise to significant levels of stress. A growing community of families of children with cancer would like to see research and care take into account their psychosocial needs. The Quebec platform in psychosocial oncology meets this expectation by coordinating and developing research capacity in supportive care across the four major Quebec-based hospitals specialized in pediatric hematology and oncology. At the heart of this structuring initiative is an effort to systematically evaluate quality of life, develop adapted interventions to attenuate distress among children and families, and build stronger competencies among caregivers.
CHARLES-BRUNEAU AWARDS PROGRAM
The Charles-Bruneau Awards Program aims to support training and expertise in pediatric hematology and oncology in Quebec.
Charles-Bruneau Emerging Scientist Awards are geared to master’s level, doctoral and postdoctoral students with the objective of helping train the next generation of exceptional researchers. They promote sharing and the advancement of knowledge and accelerate innovation in a highly specialized field.
Charles-Bruneau Clinical Excellence Awards aim to support the advanced specialization of residents, clinical fellows, nurses, pharmacists and other professionals, thereby strengthening the competencies of care teams and promoting international recognition.
COMPLEMENTARY AREAS OF INNOVATION
To fill in the missing links, several research projects will complement the efforts already undertaken. These include the study of the immune environment of pediatric tumours, the establishment of a provincial taskforce on proteomics, the early screening of thromboembolism among children in treatment, and the development of a preventive and proactive support program for oral chemotherapy administered at home.
